Honest comparison
PAI vs Claude Code
Honest comparison, updated July 2026. Claude Code is a superb agentic coding tool — terminal-native, runs on your machine, and your engineers should probably use it (ours do). PAI solves a different problem: an organisation's AI workforce, governed, on infrastructure you own. One is a power tool for a developer; the other is the operating layer for everyone else's work too.
| Feature | PAI | Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A governed AI workforce — Pies that pick up roles across your businesses | An agentic coding assistant for one developer |
| Who operates it | Owners, teams, whole organisations — roles, companies, org charts | One engineer per session |
| Models | Your keys, 35+ providers, local models for the private stuff — at cost, no markup | Anthropic's models via subscription or API |
| Where your memory lives | On your pod — imports your ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini history, per-company isolation, yours to export | Project files + conversation history tied to the tool |
| Tool access | Own-token integrations + any MCP tool server — every call gated, first use asks you (ships in the stack) | MCP support — permissions prompted per session |
| Governance | Approvals with TTL, autonomy levels L0–L3 with platform floors, budgets, kill switch | Per-action permission prompts, per machine |
| The record | Ed25519-signed, hash-chained audit + Driver Record — provable later, even offline | Session transcripts |
| Where it runs | One image, four modes: your laptop, our cloud, your VPC, demo | Your terminal (CLI/IDE), models in Anthropic's cloud |
| Coding work | Engineering Pie + your own coding-CLI token, governed like every other role | ✅ best-in-class — use it; PAI governs alongside, not instead |
The honest take: keep Claude Code for your engineers. Put PAI around the organisation — so the coding agent, the inbox, the CRM and the books all answer to the same approvals, the same budgets, and the same signed record. DRAFT — claims to be re-verified against current Claude Code docs before publication.
